Professor Lukasz Turski has passed away

Today we received the sad news of the death of one of the most brilliant, courageous and insightful personalities in Polish science, Professor Łukasz Turski - an outstanding theoretical physicist, tireless populariser of science and inspirational teacher. He became famous as a populariser of ideas and creator of the Copernicus Science Centre, but both his scientific achievements and his morally uncompromising attitude to intellectual pathologies will leave a great void.

Lukasz Andrzej Turski was born on 18 November 1943. He specialised in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. He graduated from the University of Warsaw in 1965 and was awarded the title of professor in 1985. For years, he was associated with the Centre for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw.
Professor Turski was one of the originators and co-founders of the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw, where he served as Chairman of the Programme Council from the first term until 2023. He was also the initiator of the Science Picnic, for which he received the Professor Hugo Steinhaus Award. His passion for science and his commitment to education have left an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of many generations.
Professor Turski patiently explained that nuclear energy is safe and that scientific progress is a great achievement of our time. We will miss his humour, kindness and passion for life, which he radiated by becoming an inspiration to others.
